Home Security Systems - Cameras Or Not?

By Elaine Robinson

Home security systems were made to make us feel safe and comfortable in our homes - whether we are there, or on the road. There's nothing quite as comforting as being able to snuggle into your bed at night feeling completely safe and secure. If anything goes "bump in the night" you know you're OK.
With the advent of CCTV, video is now the best security option possible. Loud alarms, flashing lights, heavy bolts, and live feeds to the local police department all have their place in the security business, but without the all important video, most bad guys are never caught.
Home burglars consist of two groups: the pros, and the street punks. The pros are adept at cutting the wires to prevent the security system from working, and the punks are usually too stupid to care, and even with the alarm blaring they are well aware they still have time to take your valuables before the cops arrive.
Some homeowners have been convinced by many alarm companies that silent alarms are the way to go. Wrong! There's nothing as useless as allowing some burglar into your home... And giving him five to ten minutes to wipe you out, or worse - to harm you. Having an alarm go off that no one can hear - including the bad guy! - is pointless!
Video is what the police need! Anyone who has ever watched reality TV can attest to how many times some stupid burglar has been caught simply because there was a video of his face and his actions, and sometimes, even his car.
A good video surveillance system is a wonderful investment. Even better is a system that includes cameras with motion detectors. A system can include one camera at the front door or it can include many cameras throughout the property inside and out. The more you can afford, the better.
A good choice is get motion cameras that have audio as well. Listening to the culprits can provide the police with valuable information, even if the video might not provide much identifiable information. Some of these idiots actually talk to each other while they are robbing your home, and they call each other by name. Frequently this is all the police need to figure out who did it! At the very least, have one camera at each entrance.
